The manager of IFK Norrkoping has told the Swedish media they plan to keep hold of Linus Wahlqvist despite the signing of Icelandic defender Alfons Sampsted.
Wahlqvist has been linked with a move to England with Leeds United and Stoke City both interested in the 20-year-old.
Expressen.se have reported on comments Jens Gustafsson made following speculation Sampsted has been brought in to replace Wahlqvist because of interest from foreign clubs.
Gustafsson said they haven’t brought in Sampsted to take Wahlqvist’s place, but understands why other clubs are interested in the Sweden international. The Norrkoping boss went on to say the only plan they have for the defender is for him to remain with the Swedish club.
“It’s not for that reason, but you are right Linus is talented, but we do not plan for anything other than Linus to belong to IFK Norrkoping,” said the Swedish coach.
We covered reports this month from the Swedish press that Leeds United were close to signing Wahlqvist in the summer, which would have made him the third Swede to be signed by Garry Monk in that window.
The youngster was again linked with Leeds United in November following claims they were lining up a bid for the player in the January window.
