Having tried to sign Granit Xhaka last summer to bolster his midfield, José Mourinho never got the player he wanted, because the Gunners never lowered their asking price.
He’s done quite well without the Switzerland international, with AS Roma currently sixth in Serie A, but there’s no denying his squad could do with some sprucing up, which is where a Tottenham player could come in.
It would be a very difficult operation mind, mostly because it’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who so happens to be a favourite of Antonio Conte and pretty much starts every game for Spurs.
The problem is that AS Roma aren’t as rich as Tottenham, and ‘the operation risks being prohibitive due to the high costs’.
This takes into account the fee that would need to be paid to Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici for the Spurs star’s services, as well as the wages he currently is on and would most likely want to keep if he were to change clubs in the summer.
All these problems mean Tottenham are probably safe from a Mourinho assault for their midfielder going forward, but you can never say never in football.
