Donny van de Beek has struggled to enjoy regular playing time at Manchester United since joining them from Ajax in the summer of 2020.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who left his role as manager on Sunday, hardly relied upon the midfielder.
This had seen him linked to clubs in England and across Europe. Among them was Barcelona, who have also had a managerial change at the club. They sacked Ronald Koeman and replaced him with Xavi Hernández this month.
Ramon Planes has also left Barcelona last week and a month ago, the former director reportedly held talks with Van de Beek, to find out whether he would be open to making a switch to the Camp Nou.
Sport say Xavi will have a major say in the club’s signings and he has ‘already been decisive in stopping’ an operation. The Barca manager was presented the possibility to sign the Netherlands international, but has ‘rejected’ having the former Ajax star at his disposal.
Xavi ‘stops’ a Van de Beek deal and this is viewed as a ‘very clear message’ to those Barca players who currently operate in the middle of the pitch.
The Dutchman, for his part, would be hoping his situation at Manchester United can change with the arrival of a new manager.
