Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has admitted he was ‘very close’ joining both Newcastle United and Tottenham in the last year and is not ruling out eventually moving to the Premier League.
Fonseca is currently a free agent after leaving Roma last summer when the Italian side brought his two years in charge to an end in favour of hiring Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese boss has yet to find a new position since then, a rare break for the manager who has been on continual work since starting with CF Estrela Amadora U19 in 2005.
Since then, he’s enjoyed spells with Porto, Braga, Shakhtar and Roma and has regularly been linked with a move to the Premier League over the years.
Ultimately the club went in a different direction when Fabio Paratici was hired as director of football.
His name emerged again later in the year, with him this time being linked to Newcastle as a replacement for Steve Bruce.
He missed out once again as the Magpies went for Eddie Howe, but those two failures have not put him off a move to England at some point.
“Today in England, there are the best teams and the best football in the world,” he told Il Romanista.
“At the beginning of the season, I was very close to Tottenham, but that didn’t materialise, as well as with Newcastle. Let’s see in the future; I think it will happen.
“Everyone would love to work in England to experience the fantastic atmosphere there. It’s something you can’t find in another country.”
