Victor Lindelof has barely left Benfica and will soon have to face his old club, if he gets picked.
As the Eagles were drawn alongside Manchester United in Group A of the Champions League, the defender will have an early encounter with his former teammates.
And it seems he’s already spoken to some of his friends at the Lisbon side, as revealed by the club director Tiago Pinto. Speaking to Sport TV, via Record, after the draw, the official was asked about the three familiar faces which will be seen at the Estádio da Luz on October 18.
“José Mourinho is known by all the Portuguese people, of course, but above all, we will have the return of Lindelof and Matic, two champions for Benfica that we are happy to welcome. By the way, Lindelof even sent some messages to people from Benfica.
“It’s a powerful club that has sought to regain the importance they had internationally in recent years, with José Mourinho at the helm. The club want to be big in Europe again and so it will not be an easy team.”
Signed from Swedish side Vasteras in 2012, Victor Lindelof spent five years at Benfica, most of the time in the reserve squad. That’s why he didn’t have as many appearances as Nemanja Matic, who despite spending only three years at the club, had a more solid spell there before being bought back by Chelsea.
José Mourinho will always get great attention from the Portuguese media, but after making history for Porto, he certainly won’t have the same warm reception as these two.
