Beating José Mourinho’s revamped Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, Manchester United showed they weren’t down and out just yet.
However, what was very clear, when looking at their bench, was how badly they needed reinforcements to add depth to their squad, especially in midfield, and one of the players mentioned a few times by the Italian press has been Emre Can.
The German midfielder has been on the fringes of Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus this season, and was left out of their Champions League squad list altogether, causing him to publicly express his displeasure at his current situation during international breaks.
That inevitably led to transfer rumours, and Gazzetta dello Sport maintain that Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are all still after him.
They explain the interest of those three clubs ‘flatters more’ than his other option, Borussia Dortmund, yet there might be a ray of hope for Can at Juventus.
Sami Khedira’s long absence (around three months) could open a door for him, regardless of Sarri’s lack of trust in his ability, which could even lead to him making January’s Champions League list ahead of his compatriot.
He’ll need to convince his manager first, but even if he doesn’t, a move in the next transfer window seems would be difficult at €35-40m (his value), and Gazzetta reckon ‘finding a summer accommodation would be easier’.
However, Juventus would need to sell him by June 30th in order for him to count towards this financial year, so perhaps a January move, if the right offer comes in, would be accepted by the Serie A champions.
Manchester United know what to do, and with Ed Woodward suggesting transfers could take place in the next month, it’s one worth keeping an eye on.
