After the furore throughout the summer, Gareth Bale’s future at Real Madrid remains something of a mystery.

The forward is not well-liked at the club, by the manager or the fans, but with high wages and a high transfer fee, coupled with a dodgy injury record, he’s not exactly desirable.

There is not a long list of clubs ready to try and take the Welshman from the Bernabeu, but Jose Mourinho’s move to Tottenham seems to have made them a possibility.

Mourinho is a big fan of Bale, having tried to take him to Manchester United during his time there and Sport believe the door could now be open for Bale to return to Tottenham.

They claim that all Spurs have to do is make a ‘minimally competent’ offer to Real Madrid, and Florentino Pérez will ‘open the doors wide’ for the transfer.

There’s even a suggestion that Tottenham could throw in Christian Eriksen as part of the deal so that everyone gets something they want.

Bale is open to a return to London, even though it would mean swapping ‘comfort and golf courses’ for ‘rain and cold’ and has even been talking about Mourinho’s move to Spurs in glowing terms in a recent interview.

There’s no mention of the figures that would be involved in the deal, although that idea of the offer needing to be ‘competent’ suggests Madrid are not after as much as they once were.

It seems if Tottenham and Mourinho want to bring the prodigal son home, all they have to do is pick up the phone. Whether Daniel Levy would consider Bale a sound investment at this stage, is another matter entirely.
