As they so often do, Manchester United had an official watch Benfica this weekend, but this time away at Vitória de Guimarães.
The Red Devils watch Benfica more than any other Premier League club do, although this time they were joined by transfer ‘spies’ from Manchester City. In total, 29 clubs sent officials to the match, which isn’t unusual during a transfer window, although only a handful have been named by O Jogo.
Ruben Dias is the player who has been most linked with a move to Old Trafford, although central defence isn’t Manchester United’s biggest concern right now and he’d be likelier to move during a summer window.
Benfica won the match 1-0, however, possibly the player who impressed most, and has caught the attention of the Portuguese media, is Marcus Edwards.
Edwards left Tottenham Hotspur in September and has been making a name for himself since then. Spurs have watched Vitória de Guimarães on occasion, leading to claims Jose Mourinho is keeping an eye on the player despite him leaving Tottenham under something of a cloud.
The 21 year old played on the right side of his team’s attack and caused problems for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo.
There’s nothing to suggest Manchester United are keen on Edwards, he just managed to stand out, and given the recent Tottenham claims it’s likely to catch attention generally, and it’s likely that will subsequently be picked up by the English media.
