AS report that Atletico Madrid face a difficult situation with three of their senior players.
According to the Spanish newspaper, Diego Godin, Filipe Luis and Juanfran all have contracts ending in June.
It had been reported last year that Godin extended his deal until 2021, but AS clearly believe that didn’t actually happen. Atletico do want a renewal but it’s thought talks going forward could be tricky, and for several reasons.
Godin is said to be highly valued outside the club, and it’s explained Manchester United ‘knocked on the door’ to sign the player in the summer, along with Juventus.
That approach was knocked back, but the fact the Uruguayan remains a wanted man is an issue. For what the three players have given to Atletico, there’s further pressure on the club to please them and secure renewals.
Then there’s the problem of the player’s age. Godin turns 33 in February, so the length of contract could be difficult.
That age issue is surely the same for Manchester United and others. As good as Godin is, and even if he was available for free in the summer, what length of contract wouldn’t be too big a gamble… and would the player be keen?
As it stands the likelihood is surely an extension.
