Manchester United are among ‘many clubs interested’ in signing Benfica star Darwin Núñez, a source has told Sport Witness.
Earlier on Tuesday, AS reported the Red Devils are ‘in the lead’ to secure the striker’s services.
It was also explained the 22-year-old’s signing is ‘an express request’ made by incoming Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag.
Earlier this month, the Uruguay international took to Twitter to confirm he will not renew the contract with his agent, Edgardo Lasalvia. Since then, various reports have stated he is now managed by Jorge Mendes.
A source has told Sport Witness the Eagles star is not a client of Mendes, but the super-agent is tasked to carry out his potential transfer in the next window.
It’s worth noting Mendes was given a mandate in helping Bruno Fernandes seal a switch from Sporting to Manchester United in January 2020, even though the Portugal international was, and still is, managed by Miguel Pinho.
Mendes’ involvement in a potential deal for Núñez in the summer would be similar to the deal that saw Manchester United sign Fernandes, in terms of the agent’s involvement.
Núñez has been in fine form for Benfica this season, managing 33 goals and four assists in all competitions. His stellar performances have not gone unnoticed as there are several clubs interested in him.
Among them are Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. The Citizens’ priority [as reported elsewhere] is to sign Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland and they will only look at Núñez if the deal for the Norwegian were to fail.
Benfica would consider negotiating his sale if they were to receive an offer of around €130m.
Although United, Arsenal, Liverpool and other clubs have registered their interest in the goalscoring star, as it stands, it is too early to even say where Núñez will end up, if he decides to leave Benfica after this season.
