The longer Mauro Icardi’s tense situation at Inter carries on, the more the Italian media are going to speculate about his potential replacement.
Among the recurring names has been Romelu Lukaku, who scored two goals against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, but his price has always made him a ‘dream’ alternative for the Argentine.
That remains the case to this day, yet Gazzetta dello Sport, who have steered away from speculation until now, bring up the Belgian’s case as one Inter are definitely looking at.
With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making it clear he favours Marcus Rashford for the centre-forward role, Lukaku has had to make do with playing down the right hand side or, in Wednesday’s case, being the main target when the England international is being rested.
This, Gazzetta say, has caused the 25-year-old to ‘think about changing air’ in the summer, but a lot will depend on how much Manchester United will ask for.
There’s a good chance the Red Devils will want to make most of their €80m expenditure back, which might be too much for Inter, especially if they don’t get the full €110m for Icardi (his release clause).
Gazzetta say ‘everything is possible’, but first, the situation around their main striker needs to be resolved.
One way or another.
