Two days ago, De Telegraaf stated Ajax have decided Manchester United’s improved offer of €50m for Lisandro Martínez is insufficient.

The 24-year-old has been identified as a target by Erik ten Hag and work is ongoing to conclude his signing.

A fresh report from De Telegraaf explains United are hopeful of securing his services and ‘don’t intend to give up without a fight’.

The Red Devils want to meet Ajax chiefs Edwin van der Sar, Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar soon, and ‘complete the deal’. The Old Trafford club have indicated they ‘certainly want to increase’ their offer and are approaching the minimum asking price of €55m.

With Manchester United insisting on signing the Argentina international and the player setting his sights on making a switch to the Premier League, the Amsterdam club have started looking for his successor in the market.

The Eredivisie winners have identified Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko as a candidate to replace the South American.

De Telegraaf’s report came out after Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo stated Ajax are negotiating with a Ukrainian defender [likely Matviyenko] before the ‘imminent departure’ of Martínez.

Merlo adds United, who are currently ahead of Arsenal in the race, are soon set to make a new offer to land the defender this summer.
