With just one year left on his contract at RB Leipzig come the 30th of June, Dayot Upamecano is going to be a wanted man in the summer.
The German side are aware of this, and they will do well to fend off the numerous Premier League sides who are likely to come forward, which will include Arsenal and Manchester United.
At least, that’s what France Football are reporting on Tuesday afternoon, claiming that while the Gunners were the first on the scene for the centre-back, they have now ‘lost ground’ to their competition.
Mikel Arteta’s side, who are described as ‘financially limited’, will have to try to beat the likes of Chelsea Tottenham and Manchester City, all seen as ‘credible candidates’, with the latter’s manager, Pep Guardiola, desperately needing long-term reinforcements in the role.
However, it’s Manchester United who could be the biggest threat, as France Football explain they are the one who ‘should be knocking on the door once more’.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his staff are currently in the process of ‘rebuilding’ the Premier League giants, and Upamecano would be a ‘less costly’ option than Kalidou Koulibaly.
That’s because of the player’s contractual situation, and while there is talk of a €60m release clause, France Football believe €40m will be enough to ‘buy the last year of his deal’.
As for Arsenal and their now precarious position in this race, perhaps that’s why they’ve decided a move for Axel Disasi might be a better option?
