Pep Guardiola has rightly received widespread praise this week for his work at Manchester City. The praise has been ongoing all season but with the Premier League title finally confirmed, there’s been an excuse to wheel out even more.

There are many, mainly opposition fans, who point at the money Manchester City have spent, but money can also be spent poorly and it’s clear Guardiola has done a good job with what he’s been given.

Manchester City are set up for the future and if they needed or wanted to sell players Pep has brought in, they’d make a good profit on most.

The row is bigger news in Spain where Josep Pedrerol, a well know journalist (sometimes for all the wrong reasons) decided to aim at Pep and fire.

You spent 530 million euros, and last year you were eliminated in the second round and this year, in the quarterfinals, you’re like Pellegrini or Mancini, as long as there are sheikhs, you can rest easy, it will be for money. When you earned it, you only earned it when you had Messi.’

Ouch, obviously that hasn’t gone down universally well, and Sport newspaper carry comments from Julio Salinas, former Barcelona player and now himself well known in the Spanish media.

Salinas put Pedrerol’s words down to ‘envy’ and suggested there’s other reasons for the comments. Those other reasons aren’t made clear, but we’re guessing ‘Real Madrid bias’ and/or ‘attention seeking’.
