One of the big talking points in Belgium as we get closer and closer to this summer’s World Cup is whether or not Roberto Martinez should take Vincent Kompany to Russia.

The Manchester City defender has finally managed to stay fit for an extended period of time, which has helped his cause, yet with a handful of already talented centre-backs guaranteed a spot, should the former Everton manager take someone else?

For Kompany himself, there’s only one answer to that question.

He said, relayed by Sud Info: “I know how I am and I know my past, but I’m ready for the World Cup, I’m sure of it. I understand that there are doubts around me and even I think they’re well founded, but that only motivates me more.

“Criticism always gives me extra motivation. This injury prone season doesn’t play in my favour, but I have a feeling that if I play at the World Cup, it could be our best tournament to date. I want to be the best.”

The 31-year-old has been called up to Martinez’s latest squad for the upcoming friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Portugal, but we’ll have to wait and see how much he uses the veteran, who is likely to feature in Pep Guardiola’s plans between now and the end of the club campaign.

As for what happens after this summer’s competition, whether he makes the plane or not, the Manchester City defender isn’t sure yet, as he still has ambitions ‘burning’ inside of him.

For now, however, it seems there’s only one goal between now and the end of the season: play as frequently as possible and stay fit.
