On Wednesday, Il Tempo really got the ball rolling regarding the idea that Manchester City could sign Edin Dzeko.
The local newspaper explained Pep Guardiola’s side, who could do with a plan B at striker these days, could even consider handing their former player an executive role should the move happen.
At nearly 35 years of age, the goalscorer is heading towards retirement sooner rather than later, and while he has a lot left to offer, it probably won’t be at AS Roma.
The Bosnian has fallen out with his manager, Paulo Fonseca, and his agent is currently working on an exit, with Manchester City the preferred option.
Corriere dello Sport have far more on the matter, however, explaining that Alessandro Lucci has ‘set to work to complete this market deal’ of returning Dzeko to his former side.
However, it’s labelled as ‘very difficult’, because Guardiola only plays with one striker, most of the time, and already has options in the role.
So far, ‘the responses have been negative’, in the sense of ‘no offence, but we are fine’, but ‘Dzeko hopes’.
The split with Fonseca is seen as ‘incurable’, and the idea is firmly ‘to leave Rome’, with the Premier League the likeliest landing spot this late in the window.
We’ll have to see how good Lucci is at convincing clubs, but right now, there are few takers.
