Sevilla’s Director of Football, Monchi, has revealed his delight at the deal he secured from Tottenham for Bryan Gil this summer.
Gil moved to Tottenham in a surprise move earlier this summer, with Spurs paying £22.5m and sending Erik Lamela the other way as part of the operation.
The move was one that came out of nowhere, with it quickly wrapped up after Tottenham made their move for the 20-year-old.
The fact Sevilla were willing to sell caught many off guard, given the Spaniard is highly rated in his home country and expected to develop into a top player in the coming years.
Their financial situation dictated the need for a sale, though, especially with their most valuable asset, Jules Koundé, yet to secure an exit.
And Monchi has now confirmed as much, revealing that Tottenham’s offer was simply too good to turn down given the finances involved.
“The Bryan Gil operation was not foreseen in that initial picture,” Diario de Sevilla report him saying.
“Julen (Lopetegui) thought he was going to get a lot out of him, but the market has turned towards a situation like this.
“We had the sword of Damocles of the salary limit, but on an economic level, it was a magnificent operation.
“We had to do it; the coach understands that there are situations that we have to face beyond the sporting aspect.
“We have done a good deal financially, and we have brought in a very good player who has to recover his level.”
