Luis Suarez will forever be held in affection by Liverpool supporters. The Uruguayan’s time at Anfield culminated in a final season that was magical.
Of course, Brendan Rodgers’ side ultimately failed to win the Premier League but the euphoria of the journey is one that Liverpool supporters won’t forget for a long time.
Suarez ultimately got his much wished for move to Barcelona and Liverpool fans largely accepted it. There was no questioning that Barcelona are better to club to play for at this moment in time, and Suarez had personal ties to the city which surpassed his close friendships at Anfield.
Ever since, whenever Suarez is asked more than a handful of questions, Liverpool seems to come up. The Barcelona player has been speaking to France Football and, sure enough, the Premier League club were mentioned.
France Football put it to Suarez that he was a leader at Liverpool but at Barcelona that isn’t the case: “There are several players in this club who have been there for years, with a lot of experience. For my part, I have also gained a lot of experience on the international level, whether in my club career or with the selection. Barca does not depend on one or two players, but a core of seven or eight players, and that’s a real bonus.”
Asked if it troubled him to not be the star of the team, Suarez replied: “No, on the contrary. I like to play low profile, be one element among others. I’m here to lend a helping hand to the team, but making decisions is not really my thing. In Liverpool, I had the opportunity to be captain, and it was not natural to me. Even if people have a hard time believing it, I’m pretty shy. I’m not used to being put forward.”
Shy? Luis Suarez? On the pitch?
It takes some believing but then the former Liverpool player could hardly declare he wants to be the star of Barcelona and take the captaincy.
