With no World Cup or European championship in the summer, Het Nieuwsblad takes a look at those Belgian players who will have to make decisions on their futures.
One of the players included in the ‘transfer fever’ list is Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur.
Wednesday’s edition of the Belgian newspaper explains the centre-back will ‘undoubtedly attract’ interested buyers like Juventus and Manchester United for one main reason.
His release clause.
Spurs took up an option to further extend the 30-year-old’s contract until 2020 and with that, the buyout clause of €28m was also triggered.
The defender’s low transfer fee makes him an interesting option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and the Old Lady.
A return to Ajax was discussed in Netherlands, but Alderweireld is not keen on rejoining them and because of his age, the north London club’s star has set his sights on joining a ‘great club’ where he can earn a lucrative salary.
It’s to be noted the former Southampton man is included in the list of players who ‘might leave’ their current club in the summer.
Manchester United and Juventus will need to sign a new centre-back for various reasons and with Alderweireld available for €28m, his experience could prove vital if he joins either of the two clubs.
