Leicester City defender Wout Faes has opened up on the ‘difficult moment’ he endured against Liverpool, and Brendan Rodgers’ reaction to it.

Faes has been a key player for Leicester since his arrival from Reims in the summer, with a series of solid performances in the heart of the Foxes’ defence before and after the World Cup.

While the Belgian has largely impressed and helped to fill the hole left by Wesley Fofana’s move to Chelsea, there have been some negatives.

One of those was his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at the end of December in which he scored two own goals and handed the Reds the win.

It was a bizarre set of circumstances, to say the least, with Faes appearing as something of a comical figure in Leicester’s defence as he put the ball into the back of his own net on two separate occasions.

It’s a moment the Leicester defender doesn’t want to think about too much but it seems his manager was not concerned despite the defeat.

“You know when you play a match like that, it’s always complicated the following days,” he told Le Soir.

“And that makes sense. It is true that there was a lot of bad luck. But having reviewed the phases afterwards, I know that I could have done better on the first goal.

“It’s the kind of thing that happens once in a lifetime. Unfortunately for me, it happened twice in the same game. But I must say that, despite this difficult moment, I immediately felt the support of the coach. He directly told me not to worry.

“Besides, he was very satisfied that I stayed in my match.

“In the second half, I played as if nothing had happened. For him, few players would have been able to do so well afterwards, especially in such an atmosphere with the Liverpool supporters.

“A month after these events, he told me that he had never felt that I doubted during my matches.

“He knew I was strong in my head. So, yes, it was a less good match, but I put it aside and I continue to move forward.”
