Earlier on Wednesday, the Telegraph reported Ajax have joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
These claims have also been backed by Voetbal International and their headline states Ajax are ‘aiming’ for the Denmark international.
Ajax are looking to bolster the midfield and therefore, they have set their sights on the Saints player.
The midfielder’s contract is until 2021 and has decided against signing an extension. This has resulted in the 24-year-old losing his captaincy at St Mary’s.
The former Bayern Munich man featured twice for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side since the restart and has been left out of the squad in the last two matches.
During his time with Bayern Munich II, the Dane played under Erik ten Hag, who is now in charge of the Amsterdam based club.
In addition to this, he has played alongside Ajax star Dušan Tadić for two years at Southampton.
A move to Johan Cruyff Arena will help the Saints man reunite with his former coach and teammate.
As has been previously reported, the report also add Ajax will face competition from Spurs as José Mourinho’s side are ‘interested’ in the midfielder.
VI only state Ajax are looking at Højbjerg as a ‘potential reinforcement’ for next season, and there’s no mention of the fee needed to complete the player’s signing this summer.
