When Portuguese newspapers report contact from English clubs, these rumours are often forgotten. We could spend hours making lists of players who were linked to clubs just once, and the outlets never followed up the story.
But this isn’t the case with Gelson Martins and Liverpool. With an entire transfer window ahead, there’s still a chance the player can leave Sporting, and the Reds’ reported offer from a few weeks ago is still being recalled.
A Bola claims this is the only concrete approach Sporting have received so far. Liverpool have made two different bids, according to the Portuguese claims, with the second reaching the €50m mark.
As reported before, both were turned down, and it’s insisted Sporting are only selling Gelson for his release clause, which is of €60m.
Manager Jorge Jesus is said to be worried about the situation. That’s why he called Gelson during his vacations and told him it would be important to stay at the club for one more year.
Still, the picture seems good for Liverpool should their interest be genuine. With no competition around, they could still convince Sporting by adding some bonuses or even raising the offer.
That’s obviously a lot of money for an unproven youngster, and we’re still not 100% buying this story. But from what A Bola claim, the possibility of a departure is starting to worry the manager, making the transfer sound more likely.
And Liverpool are not far from the clause.
