Atlético Madrid midfielder Saúl Ñíguez is ‘very seriously’ contemplating a move away from the club this summer, with Liverpool continuing to be linked.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who cover the situation around the Spaniard today as he continues in pre-season with Diego Simeone’s side.
The newspaper reports that Saúl is continuing to train and work with the Spanish side, even featuring as captain in their second game of pre-season.
The spotlight is very much on him, though, because the player has been contemplating an exit ‘for months’ by this point.
Atlético, for their part, are not going to stand in his way but are demanding an offer that is ‘in accordance’ with his ‘importance and hierarchy’.
So far, they are yet to receive any formal offer, but there is interest, with it stated that both Liverpool and Manchester United ‘want him’.
This is backed up by Marca, who say, ‘Saúl has to leave, no matter what’ and both he and the club have agreed he can go when they receive a suitable bid.
With the chance of a swap deal with Barcelona fading into the distance, the Premier League looks like their best bet.
Marca back up that there is ‘interest’ from both Liverpool and Manchester United, but that ‘has yet to materialise into a firm offer’.
It’s a situation that needs resolving fast, though, with MD even stating it would be better for all parties if he were to sort his future out ‘as soon as possible’.
The door, then, is open for Liverpool to get their man, but they’ll have to make an offer that Atlético feel is suitable, something they are yet to do.
