Liverpool have been dragged into an increasingly dramatised battle to sign Leon Goretzka, of perhaps that should be further dragged into the battle.
Having been linked, albeit weakly, by the German media previously, Thursday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo says Liverpool have submitted some sort of offer for the player.
With a Schalke contract running until June 2018, Liverpool and others would be able to pick themselves up a bargain, but obviously have to be very persuasive.
Jurgen Klopp would be taking Liverpool into a battle which also features Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich. That accounts for the Catalan newspaper interest, with it being stated Goretzka has his heart set on Barcelona, the only question being whether the approach would come in January or wait until the summer.
Over in Germany it would be assumed by many, with quite a lot of justification, that Bayern Munich would have the best chance of signing the 22 year old – it’s just what usually happens in this type of situation.
Should Liverpool interest be genuine, and not simply an effort from the German and Spanish media to make things more exciting, then this is a hard one for Klopp to win.
