Liverpool are one of the ‘candidates’ interested in Benfica star Darwin Núñez.
That’s according to AS on Tuesday, who have a report stating that there are ‘up to seven teams willing to undertake the operation’ for the striker in the summer.
This includes Liverpool and the report states the Merseyside club are among the three Premier League teams that ‘stand out’ in the race to sign the 22-year-old.
The Uruguay international has starred for the Primeira Liga side this season, scoring 33 goals and registering four assists from 39 matches in all competitions. He scored a goal in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against the Reds.
Núñez is expected to switch agents to Jorge Mendes, and AS explain several English clubs will meet the super-agent to ‘advance his signing’ and ‘find out all the details’ to carry out the deal in the next window.
The report further states his price will not drop below €100, while Benfica are hopeful it reaches €130m, so that it can exceed the €127m fee received from João Félix’s sale to Atlético Madrid in 2019.
Online, AS again mention Liverpool’s interest in the South American.
Although Jürgen Klopp’s side ‘stand out’ as one of the ‘candidates’, they add Núñez’s possible arrival at Anfield ‘may be conditioned’ to Mohamed Salah leaving the Premier League side after this season. In other words, Liverpool will not look at the Benfica star if the Egyptian continues at the club next term.
