Barcelona maintain an interest in signing Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.
According to Sport, the midfielder is facing a ‘decisive week’ to sort out his future.
The Reds will kick start the 2020/21 season against Leeds United on Saturday, and the 29-year-old will try to ‘solve his transfer’ to Camp Nou before the opening fixture of the new campaign.
It’s claimed Wijnaldum must play a part as his ‘involvement in the operation is fundamental’ for him to become a Barca player.
The 29-year-old is ‘excited’ about the possibility of reuniting with Ronald Koeman and he ‘puts pressure on Liverpool’ to get a move away from the club. However, talks have ‘stalled’.
His current deal at Anfield lasts until 2021, and the English champions value the former Newcastle United man around €17m.
The Blaugrana want to make a minimal investment in signing the Dutchman, and feel the fee quoted by Liverpool is ‘excessive’ for a footballer who will turn 30 in November, and can sign a pre-contract from January.
Wijnaldum is an important player for Jürgen Klopp, and therefore, Liverpool don’t want to lower his asking price.
Sport state the relationship between the two parties isn’t going through the best moment after the renewal talks didn’t yield any results.
With Wijnaldum pushing for a move away from Liverpool, Klopp’s side have shifted their focus to Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcântara.
According to the claims, the Merseyside club are waiting for Barca to make a move for their player, and want to use the funds from Wijnaldum’s sale to Thiago.
Over at Mundo Deportivo, journalist Miguel Rico has stressed that without major sales, Barcelona cannot bring a new player to the club this summer.
Although Wijnaldum wants to resolve his future before the end of this week, Barca can only make an approach for him once they trim their squad.
