Claims of Liverpool interest in Jeremy Mathieu never seemed to make a whole deal of sense. The Barcelona defender is competent, but Liverpool seemed to be going in different directions and Mathieu wasn’t a Jurgen Klopp type target.
Not German, not in the Bundesliga, not a young talent.
Nevertheless, the Spanish media picked up on the claims, which originally started in France, and linking Liverpool made everything more interesting. The other club linked was Besiktas, and with the current Turkish situation, Istanbul isn’t so attractive.
However, Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo report on Thursday that no offers have arrived. Not direct, or even through an intermediary. The player isn’t pushing for an exit, despite a likely reduced role at Barcelona next season, and there’s a shortage of takers.
It seems a prime opoortunity for a club to go for as the season starts, and perhaps a defender gets injured. Just not Liverpool.
