Liverpool are keeping close tabs on BK Häcken’s young star Momodou Sonko, according to a report from Sweden.
Operating mainly on the left wing and at times on the right wing, he’s managed 11 goals and seven assists from 35 games this year.
According to Expressen, the 18-year-old is attracting interest from European clubs, including Liverpool.
It’s said the Merseyside club sent a scout to watch him in action against Qarabağ FK in the Europa League on Thursday. Apart from Jürgen Klopp’s side, Barcelona and RB Leipzig are also showing interest in the Sweden U19 international.
Among these clubs, the report states Liverpool and Leipzig are the ‘hottest club right now’ in the race to secure the attacker’s services.
These two clubs seem to be serious. Last week, Leipzig watched Sanko live in action in a friendly tie against HJK Helsinki, while Liverpool were previously at Bravida Arena to watch him during a training session with Häcken.
Sonko’s contract expires in 2025 and Expressen aren’t clear whether he’ll change clubs in January.
Häcken are aiming for a club-record fee, surpassing the SEK 50m [€4.4m] earned from Bénie Traore’s sale to Sheffield United earlier this year. Expressen state they are hoping to collect between SEK 90m [€8m] and SEK 100m [€8.9m] for Sonko.
The Swedish club’s request seems to be affordable for Liverpool, who will have to convert their interest into an offer to acquire his signature.
“I think every club I’ve talked to knows who he is. This has been the case for a long time and it’s all the way up to the absolute top teams in Europe. Many people have been following him for a long time,” Häcken sporting director Martin Ericsson said about Sonko in October.
