When he arrived at Anfield from Sevilla in 2014, Alberto Moreno was looked at as one of the more exciting left-backs in Europe.
Paying over £15m for him, Liverpool wanted an attacking full-back, and that’s what they got, meaning some of his defensive attributes left a lot to be desired, and when Jürgen Klopp arrived, he quickly fell out of favour.
Replaced by James Milner in the role, the 25-year-old spent most of last season watching a midfielder shine in his role, which he wasn’t best pleased about.
This season, however, things have changed a bit, and Moreno is seeing a lot more action on the pitch, starting all but two of Liverpool’s league games so far and featuring in all of their Champions League clashes.
That said, a new left-back still appears to be a priority at Anfield, with rumours linking them to Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam prior to his season ending injury.
Well, with the Algeria international now injured, the Serie A side are looking at players who could help fill the gap in January, and Alberto Moreno, according to Il Mattino is on the list of potential names.
Before you jump for joy/start getting annoyed depending on your affinity towards the player, the Italian newspaper does state he is one of the more ‘improbable’ ones.
The reason behind that, we can only assume, being the fact Liverpool are very short in the department, with Andy Robertson yet to fully convince Klopp.
One to keep an eye on if the Same Vrsaljko and Alex Grimaldo avenues fail, but Moreno’s future, until the summer, at least, should be at Anfield.
