Former Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Basler has suggested that defender David Alaba could end up at Liverpool.
Alaba is looking increasingly likely to leave the German champions in the near future, with his contract at the club set to expire next summer and no sign of a new deal being agreed.
He’s already been linked with clubs around Europe, with Manchester City thought to be particularly keen on him after expressing interest in the summer.
They are not likely to be his only suitors, with the defender sure to be hot property given his experience and the fact clubs can negotiate with him over a free transfer for next summer.
“The story with Alaba should really end with him going away,” he told Sport1-Fantalk.
“Maybe he’ll go to Liverpool. They have big problems with the injury to Van Dijk and the cruciate ligament rupture.
“He’s supposed to be out for a long time, and I think there’s a big need (to strengthen) in the central defender position.”
Signing Alaba would certainly make sense for Liverpool as they could undoubtedly do with an experienced, high-level player coming in after Van Dijk’s injury.
There is one problem, though, and that is his wages. It’s been made clear in the current situation that his demands are huge and Bayern’s reluctance to meet them is why they’re in this mess.
Given Liverpool’s tight control of wages, it seems unlikely they would be willing to match Alaba’s demands, or even get close to them.
Of course, that could always change, perhaps Klopp will demand a big signing or Alaba will lower what he wants to secure a move. However, unless that happens, this transfer seems unlikely to happen.
