Since that dreaded Champions League evening, Loris Karius has had repeat career issues.
His prolonged loan with Besiktas had multiple problems, with the goalkeeper at times questioned over his form and then having issues getting his wages from the Turkish club.
In the summer he swapped Turkey for a return to Germany, signing for Union Berlin on loan for the season. However, he hasn’t yet played a competitive match for the Bundesliga club, although that could change this evening.
Kicker report Karius is expected to start against second division SC Paderborn in a cup match. Despite that, it doesn’t signal a change in how Union see their goalkeeper situation, and 33-year-old Andreas Luthe will continue to be first choice.
According to the report, it all means there’s a ‘possible premature end of the loan’, which would see Karius returning to Liverpool. Whether he’d then stay at Anfield for the rest of the season isn’t clear, but it would be a surprise move.
Karius’ contract with the Reds lasts until June 2022, and at 27-years-of-age he really needs to find a club where he can get his once promising career back on track.
As it stands, it doesn’t look like Union Berlin is that place.
