Joël Matip was one of the players Liverpool released at the end of last season.
The defender was restricted to only 14 appearances in that campaign. He didn’t feature for the Reds this year after suffering a serious injury last December.
Since leaving Liverpool, the 32-year-old is yet to find a new club, and has options to pick from.
Bayer Leverkusen are one of them if a report from Sky Deutschland journalist Patrick Berger is to be believed.
He took to X to state that the Bundesliga winners want to add experience to their back line, and they are now looking at former Liverpool man.
Berger claims Xabi Alonso’s side have contacted both the centre-back and his agent over the possibility of signing him for free this summer. This could be an impressive move for the player, just weeks after leaving Liverpool.
Matip was a product of Schalke’s youth system and spent seven years with their first team before leaving them for Liverpool as a free agent in 2016. He played 201 matches for the Premier League side over the last eight years.
As well as Matip, Berger says Bayer Leverkusen are looking at Mats Hummels, who is also without a club since leaving Borussia Dortmund last month.
