Liverpool were keen on a move for Atlético Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez earlier this summer but have now been overtaken by Chelsea and Manchester United.
That’s according to AS, who say the latter duo are now stepping up their efforts to sign the Spaniard.
Saul has been linked with a move away from Atlético this summer, having played something of a reduced role last season, something which cost him a place in Spain’s squad for the Euros this summer.
A move to the Premier League has looked the most likely, particularly when it became apparent a swap deal with Barcelona for Antoine Griezmann was not feasible.
Liverpool have been linked in Spain throughout the summer transfer window, and AS state they were ‘also in the fight’ at the beginning of the market.
The situation has changed, though, with Chelsea and Manchester United now in the picture, and his departure ‘could be imminent’ as a result.
The newspaper seemingly suggests that Liverpool have been edged out.
Jurgen Klopp still needs a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, and the recent sale of Xherdan Shaqiri does give him some funds to play with, particularly as AS say a loan deal is most likely for Saul.
