It’s always a bit strange when Liverpool get linked with a new centre-back, mostly because they spent a fair chunk of money on Ibrahima Konaté last season and already have the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip at the club.
However, that hasn’t stopped the Italian media to throw the Reds’ name into the mix when it comes to Matthijs De Ligt’s next destination.
Corriere dello Sport are the ones to blame for this one on Wednesday, as they look at the situation surrounding the Dutch centre-back going forward.
Juventus are set to meet with Rafaela Pimenta, his representative following Mino Raiola’s untimely passing, where ‘the discussions linked to the renewal of De Liga needs to be deepened’.
That’s because the player ‘would be willing to extend the contract expiring in 2024, but is asking for a much lower release clause than the current one of €125m, which will rise to €140m next season’.
He also remains the ‘most coveted piece’ at Juventus, where the ‘old interests of Chelsea and Barcelona have been joined by that of Liverpool’.
That’s pretty much all they have to say on the matter, and we’ll have to see if it goes any further than that, but defence isn’t really an area Jürgen Klopp’s side need to really spend vasts amount of money on these days.
That being said, we’re pretty sure Liverpool fans wouldn’t mind boasting a Virgil Van Dijk and Matthijs De Ligt backline.
