Sweden captain Andreas Granqvist has hinted he could retire from international football if he joins FC Copenhagen in the next window.
The Danish side are reported to be interested in the 32 year old and if does quit the Swedish national team this could open the door for Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson.
Speaking to Aftonbladet, Granqvist was asked about the possibility of signing for FC Copenhagen, and the impact this would have on playing for Sweden: “They have shown a great interest in me for a long time. But I’ve not yet made my decision. It can be difficult to play in the Superettan and at the same time continue in the national team.”
“We’ll see how Janne thinks and I feel. Now it’s full focus on the playoff. We’ll have that discussion afterwards.”
Whenever Granqvist or Victor Lindelof haven’t been available for selection Andersson has normally turned to the Leeds United defender, and the 25 year old played his part in helping his country to the World Cup playoffs.
The Elland Road favourite has established himself in the Sweden squad since Janne Andersson was installed as the manager just over a year ago, and he’ll surely be part of the playoff selection against Italy next month.
