Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has told the Swedish media they can catch Newcastle United and Brighton in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League. Leeds United currently sit 4th in the Championship table, and look certain of making the play-offs.
Speaking to Sydsvenskan, Jansson was asked whether Leeds United could gain ground on the top two in the Championship. The 25-year-old said he sees no reason why this can’t happen because Newcastle United and Brighton can drop points between now and the end of the season. The Swede insisted his club still want to grab one of the automatic promotion spots, and they can make up the ground.
“It’s a possibility. The teams at the top, Newcastle and Brighton, are beginning to slump a little. We have not lost many games, we are very stable. As long as there is a theoretical possibility, we need to aim for the top two. And eight points is not much in the Championship,” said the Leeds United star.
Leeds United improved their promotion chances last weekend after the top three all dropped points. Newcastle United were only able to get a draw, and Huddersfield Town were thumped by Bristol City, whilst Leeds United beat Brighton 2-0.
