RB Leipzig are still ‘fighting’ with Leeds United over the €21m they believe they are owed for Jean-Kevin Augustin as they look for the funds to complete a deal for Dominik Szoboszlai.
That’s according to BILD, who say FIFA are now investigating the case but are unlikely to make a decision until next summer.
The two clubs have been arguing over a fee for Augustin since the summer when he returned to the Bundesliga club after a loan spell at Elland Road last year.
The striker joined Marcelo Bielsa’s side in January last year as they pushed to secure promotion from the Championship, but he went on to make just three appearances and 48 minutes in total.
The loan deal included a mandatory purchase clause of €21m for the summer, but Leeds have refused to pay it, arguing that the clause expired as a result of the season stopping due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Leipzig have naturally argued against that, insisting they are owed the money, even though Augustin has now moved to Nantes.
FIFA are ‘investigating’ the case but will not make a decision by the end of the year, with them more likely to have ‘passed a verdict’ by the summer.
If they rule in favour of Leipzig and force Leeds to pay, this could be ‘invested’ in Szoboszlai, whose release clause of €25m must be activated by December 15th and paid in one instalment by the end of the year.
