Speaking ahead of his country’s double header with Fiji Leeds United star Chris Wood has told the New Zealand media Garry Monk has helped him progress this season.
Speaking to Stuff, Wood said having the backing of the Leeds United manager has been a factor in his impressive form. The New Zealand international believes this is essential in football, and the fact Leeds United are pushing for promotion has meant the team has been able to build momentum.
“Having that faith from the manager is huge in football, that’s what you need, that’s what you strive for, if you’ve got the backing of your manager you go so much further. It also helps that if you get on a roll in the competition like the Championship the games come thick and fast,” said the Leeds United forward.
Wood’s brace against Brighton last weekend enabled Leeds United to gain ground on the top two in the Championship, and gives them an outside chance of grabbing one of the automatic promotion places.
Leeds United are just eight points off second placed Brighton, following their 2-0 victory over their promotion rivals on Saturday.
Monk’s side have more or less guaranteed a place in the play-offs, and Wood has been key in this. The forward is the current Championship top goalscorer after pulling away from Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle in recent weeks.
