Leeds United are yet to hear from FIFA if they will have to pay RB Leipzig compensation for striker Jean-Kevin Augustin.
That’s according to SPOX, who say RB Leipzig are ‘calm’ about the situation as they chase the money they believe they are owed.
For those that don’t know, Augustin spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Leeds, with Marcelo Bielsa adding a striker in January to try and boost their promotion hopes.
He ultimately proved to be a massive failure at Elland Road, though, managing just three appearances and 48 minutes during his time there.
They obviously didn’t want him permanently, but the initial loan deal included a clause that stated they were obligated to buy for €21m if they were promoted to the Premier League.
That is something Leeds did, but they argued the clause was invalid because football was suspended due to Coronavirus they were promoted in July but the loan ended in June.
Their argument was that they did not need to pay, something Leipzig naturally disagreed with, taking the case to FIFA.
They had ‘expected’ a result from that in March or April, but according to CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, that hasn’t happened, with him stating: “We are still waiting for the verdict. We are very relaxed about it.”
In the meantime, Augustin has left Leipzig and moved to Nantes, where the 23-year-old has continued to struggle for form and was sent to the reserves in February.
He’s free of this issue now, unlike Leeds, who still have the threat of a €21m payment hanging over them a year after Augustin left the club.
