Romelu Lukaku is edging closer towards completing a return to Stamford Bridge and there was huge excitement among Chelsea fans when the striker was seen arriving in England on on Monday.
Instead of travelling directly to London from Milan, Lukaku first landed in Nice and from there, he made a short trip to Monte Carlo to finalise the last details of his exit from Inter Milan.
The Blues overcame Villarreal to win the UEFA Super Cup at Windsor Park on Wednesday.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the 28-year-old’s intention was to travel to Belfast on Tuesday, to meet his new Chelsea teammates, but this plan was cancelled.
That’s because the former Everton man was waiting in France to receive a ‘green light’ from the Serie A winners. The Nerazzurri gave their approval after working on signing Edin Džeko as his replacement.
HLN explain the delay was not Chelsea’s fault as Inter ‘only wanted to sign the papers if they got hold’ of the Belgium international’s successor.
Therefore, the final ‘obstacle’ for Lukaku to seal a switch to his former club is removed and that allowed him travel to London, days after he completed his medical tests in Milan.
HLN’s claims are also relayed by Sky Italia, who say the frontman carried out his Chelsea medical in Milan before making a trip to France and landed in the English capital on Wednesday.
It’s said Lukaku will ‘sign the contract with Chelsea in next few hours’ and now only the official announcement of his transfer from Inter to the west London club is ‘missing’.
