It’s not often we find transfer stories about Derby County in the German media, but there’s a big claim in this week’s edition of SportBild.
Frank Lampard taking over at the Championship club has obviously had an impact on the potential business Derby will do this summer, and SportBild believe Salomon Kalou has become a target.
It’s explained that when the pair played together for Chelsea they became friends off the pitch too. The Ivorian moved to Stamford Bridge in 2006 and spent six years with Chelsea before moving on to Lille.
Kalou is currently with Hertha Berlin and was their second top scorer last season with 12 goals and three assists, so the German club would prefer if he sticks around. However, a ‘double-digit’ offer for the player would ‘probably’ make Hertha ‘ready to talk’.
Even at the lowest end of the scale, €10m, that’s an awful lot of money for a player who will turn 33 years of age in August.
Hertha have Kalou on a contract until 2020 and will feel protected by that, he renewed that deal in 2017 and has gone on to justify it.
A lot may depend on what Kalou himself wants to do and whether he’s tempted by the chance of joining Lampard in the Championship with Derby County.
