Barcelona’s search for a new manager has reached a relative lull. Following Luis Enrique’s announcement that he’ll leave the club at the end of the season there was an immediate rush to pinpoint candidates.
That’s calmed down slightly as it’s become apparent real decisions may not be made until the end of the season, and everyone should probably concentrate more on trying to win something.
One of the men repeatedly linked with Barcelona is Everton manager Ronald Koeman and Mundo Deportivo report on Tuesday that the match between the Toffees and Spurs will have been of interest.
Despite Koeman’s Everton coming out as losers the Dutchman emerged with credit, and Mundo Deportivo point out that he was the last manager to win a trophy with Valencia. That’s significant, Valencia have been a basket case for some time and Betis’ Joachim recently came out and said Koeman, whilst at Los Che, was the worst manager he’s ever had.
Koeman is seen as a manager who won’t be taken for a fool and who will give as much importance to young players as to more established figures.
This sounds very much like Louis van Gaal, and Mundo Deportivo ponder how it would go down at the current Barcelona. Van Gaal wasn’t afraid of upsetting senior players, and Joachim’s words show neither is Koeman.
A popular name among the Barcelona board, so say the Catalan newspaper, Koeman is said to be someone who wouldn’t simply swap jobs for money.
Should Barcelona want the Everton manager then they’d have to convince him the project is attractive enough.
