Juventus director Giuseppe Marotta has finally ruled out the transfer of Liverpool’s Emre Can to the club.
The Juve official spoke to the local media before the Old Lady’s league clash against Genoa, and was questioned about the club’s quest for players in the last days of the transfer window.
Marotta claimed there’s a big chance to land Benedikt Höwedes from Schalke 04, and when asked about Can, replied: “No, that’s a closed path.” (via Calcio Mercato).
It’s no secret that Juve are working hard on landing a midfielder this summer, and Liverpool’s Can was said to be one of the main targets for the past couple of months.
But it has always been clear that Liverpool would not let him go so easily, especially with another important player such as Philippe Coutinho already being close to the exit door.
The latest rumours from the Italian press have been saying Juve should go for André Gomes or Kevin Strootman for the position instead.
Serie A champions Juventus moving on will be a relief to Jurgen Klopp, who may now be able to get Can to sign a Liverpool renewal.
