Kevin Mbabu’s transfer from VfL Wolfsburg to Fulham can likely be characterised as a complete disaster.
In the half season after signing for the London club he picked up 145 minutes of Premier League action. Given he clearly wasn’t an important part of the squad, Fulham loaned him to Servette in the Swiss Super League for the second half of that season.
Fulham weren’t interested in having him last season either, and so the fullback was loaned to Bundesliga club Augsburg.
When that loan came to an end it was again time to find a new home, and this time Fulham managed to part ways permanently, with Mbabu moving to Denmark’s FC Midtjylland on a two year deal.
The 29-year-old has now spoken to Ekstra Bladet about the transfer, with the Danish newspaper keen to know how it transpired.
Mbabu is quoted as saying: “Kristian Kjær (FCM’s technical director) has a large share in my change. I talked to him more in the last days leading up to the move than he talked to his wife.
“I didn’t know him before, but we started talking at the end of July. There I met him for the first time. When he first introduced me to the club, its philosophy, the work with the young players, the first team, the training facilities and the ambitions, I had no doubts.
“I am an ambitious person who wants to win titles. Although FC Midtjylland is already the best club in Denmark, they still have towering ambitions and big goals every season. ❘ this season I want to win ‘the double’. We haven’t done that yet, so I will. And next season we want to be in the Champions League.”
The transfer is seen as unusual in Denmark, mainly because of the calibre of clubs Mbabu has on his CV.
He also told Ekstra Bladet that Augsburg wanted to take him back, and added: “There were clubs in Spain, Germany, Holland and several clubs further away, but I am sure that I have come to the right place.”
