Oli McBurnie has so far played five matches since making the unusual decision to sign for Las Palmas. It was thought he could have stayed on at Sheffield United, but the forward decided on a different kind of adventure and headed off for the Canary Islands.
There was excitement around the signing from day one in the Spanish media, largely because it was seen as intriguing. Here was this player who’d spent the past five years with Sheffield United, was seen as something typical of UK football, and was now joining a La Liga outpost.
Of course, Las Palmas fans would have liked McBurnie to have found the back of the net by now, but Spain’s Diario de Noticias reports supporters have been encouraged because he ‘partly compensates for this with his dedication on the field’.
McBurnie has also provided two assists, one coming in a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, so that certainly helps.
Diario de Noticias explain to their audience that the 28-year-old didn’t smash goalscoring charts for Sheffield United either, so people expecting that were misaken over what he’d bring.
So far, there’s contentment and a real desire for him to do well.
Las Palmas face Osasuna on Saturday afternoon.
