Would-be Everton owner John Textor has revealed his thinking on the Director of Football model, and what kind of person he could be looking for if he takes over at Goodison Park.
RMC Sport cover comments from the American businessman today after he held a press conference at Lyon, another of his clubs, yesterday.
He discussed various topics in that press conference including plenty about Everton, who he is looking to buy once he has sold his shares in Crystal Palace.
Textor has already revealed he’s in talks with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri about a deal, even stating yesterday that there is a 90% chance he becomes the Toffees’ new owner at some point this year.
Whether that is the case remains to be seen given Moshiri’s attempts to sell have been nothing but complicated up to this point, with 777a Partners proving to be unworthy and The Friedkin Group electing to pull out despite getting close.
Textor is certainly pushing to make the takeover happen and saying all the right things to appease Everton fans in the interim.
His latest comments on the director of football role will certainly be of interest and could be a positive for current incumbent Kevin Thelwell.
“We are looking for a slightly different profile,” he said when discussing Lyon’s search for someone to fill the role.
“We make purchases together, we need a braintrust, we work together on these decisions. We are focusing on recruiters; we want to strengthen the management in support of the players. We need someone who knows the relationship with the players, who would be there to support the coach.
“The coach needs someone who works well with him. There are sporting directors who do both, but it is not the ‘me me, me me…’ that I am looking for. The position will not be 100% transfer window.”
