It’s been a week since Graham Potter left Brighton & Hove Albion for Chelsea and the Seagulls are yet to appoint his permanent successor.
For the past few days, reports in England and across Europe have named a few candidates and among them is Mainz 05 manager Bo Svensson.
He has been with the Bundesliga side since January 2021 and his club currently sit sixth in the table after six games.
Following claims Brighton are keen on the 43-year-old, BT in Denmark got in touch with Svensson and told him he probably knows why they made contact. The coach said: “It’s because we have a game against Hertha Berlin on Friday.”
BT then informed the Dane of claims about the Seagulls’ interest in him. Responding to that, he said: “There has been no contact between me and Brighton. I probably don’t really need to comment on this either. It’s the media that has written something without any sources, and I’ve just been sent the story.”
Although the Mainz coach confirmed there’s been no contact with Brighton, he is delighted with the latest claims.
“It’s flattering, if that’s true. Otherwise, I don’t have much to deal with right now – for me, it’s not concrete right now. But if there’s any truth to it, I’m flattered by it without saying too much else about it,” the Dane stressed.
“Everything is relative. What is the time ahead? I have a contract until the end of next season and that’s what I’m dealing with right now. I signed that contract with the intention of fulfilling it, and that’s what I can relate to right now.”
When asked what he will do if Brighton offer him the job, Svensson said: “We can continue the hypotheses indefinitely. I don’t have reason to comment on it that much.”
BT state a move to England will be a ‘step up’ for the Bundesliga manager. A switch to the Premier League won’t be easy considering Mainz chief Christian Heidel made it clear the German club will not allow Svensson to leave for Brighton.
