At the weekend, claims were made in the South American media about Real Madrid’s interest in Miguel Almiron of Newcastle United.
Sport Witness were successful in tracking down the original source and it came from journalist Markos Gonzalez, who works for Paraguay’s Tigo Sports. He tweeted Los Blancos are following the 25-year-old ‘very closely’.
It was a strange one, because Tigo didn’t have it splashed all over their website, which would be expected.
Still in the Copa America, Paraguay face host nation Brazil in the first quarterfinal of the tournament.
Almiron attended the pre-match press conference and was asked about the recent rumours linking him with the 13-time European champions.
“No, I do not know anything about that [rumours of Real Madrid interest]. For me it’s an honour that a team like that (Real Madrid) looks at me. However, I’m not aware of anything. Now I’m focused on the Copa America and then Newcastle,” Sport quoted the player as saying.
Almiron joined the Magpies in January 2019 and still has five years left on his contract at St James’ Park.
The Spanish media haven’t really given this one much attention, and they would if there was any serious interest in the player. It’s possible Real Madrid have a scout at the Copa America, and with Almiron doing well, the assumption has been made.
