Sunderland star Emanuele Giaccherini has been subject of a lot of transfer speculation in the last couple of months.
The 31-year-old was first expected to make his move permanent to Bologna, and then rumours linked him to Torino, Fiorentina, and a few other Serie A clubs.
Yesterday, reports suggested the player could be close to sealing a transfer to Napoli.
Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio reported a meeting took place between Napoli and Giaccherini’s representatives.
According to a latest report on Gazzetta dello Sport, there has been white smoke after a meeting between Napoli’s sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, and Giaccherini’s representatives.
‘White smoke’ is in reference to when a new Pope is chosen. Once white smoke comes from the Sistine Chapel, everyone knows it’s a done deal.
Gazzetta say the meeting started at 5:15 pm, and everything was wrapped up just in time for dinner at 7:00 pm.
Napoli have agreed a €2m fee with Sunderland for Giaccherini, and the player has also agreed to sign a three-year contract worth €1.5m a season.
The Serie A club wanted to signed Antonio Candreva, but decided to walk away from the deal. That, obviously, left the door open for Giaccherini to complete his big move to Napoli.
