Sometimes, a claim comes out from an unlikely source that makes you scratch your head and say: “Wait, what?”.
That was our reaction on Wednesday when Corriere dello Sport announced to the world that Manchester United had a bid rejected for Mateo Kovacic a few months ago.
This comes off the back of an alleged Inter interest in bringing the Croatia international back for next season, and the Italian newspaper use that bit of information to warn the Serie A side that he won’t come cheap.
Corriere describe Manchester United’s bid for the former Dinamo Zagreb starlet as ‘rich’, showing that Florentino Pérez still believes the 23-year-old has a future at Santiago Bernabeu.
Looking back at previous stories around Europe, we can’t find anything stating Manchester United actually made a move for Kovacic, even if there was a brief couple of days towards the end of January when there was reported interest.
With José Mourinho preparing a big summer of spending to try and bridge the gap between his and Pep Guardiola’s team next season, perhaps we haven’t heard the last of this.
At the same time, we wouldn’t hold our breath about this information being all that truthful just yet considering it’s chucked in the article as a throwaway sentence.
